Why Alcohol Will Make You Fat and Stop You Gaining Muscle

April 30, 2009 · Filed Under Muscle Building Diet · Comment

I used to wonder why I didn’t achieve the increase in muscle mass that I wanted.  One day I looked around at other people training, and realised that a lot of them got bigger muscles than me with a lot less effort.  Later that year I moved to a new city, where I didn’t know anyone.  It was at this time that I stopped partying and drinking every week, and suddenly I started gaining muscle like crazy (well not that quickly, but significantly faster than I used to).

So the answer is that alcohol effects muscular tissue growing significantly, and lots of drinking will unquestionably cause a substantial harmful affect on your muscle mass increasing. Drinking is harmful to a greater extent than many people believe, and it is  essential that you realise how affects your advancement. If you are want to achieve a really amazing bod, you had better know the primary effects that drinking has on decelerating your muscle mass gains.

It slows down protein absorption.

When you absorb protein amino group acids are connected to create proteins. Becoming intoxicated decelerates this by around 20%, and because your muscular tissue are comprised from protein, this creates a problem when trying to build your muscles.

It helps you store more fat.

As alcohol contains  seven gram calories, alcoholic beverages can really be rather fatning. Drinking also interrupts the fat burning cycle. Read more

Buying Dumbell Advice

January 15, 2009 · Filed Under Weights Equipment · Comment

Dumbells are an essential piece of equipment to anyone who is going to do workouts at home. They allow you to do many different types of exercises and should be the first piece of equipment bought for any new home gym.

When buying dumbells there are two main types to consider: Adjustable Dumbells and Dumbell Sets.

Adjustable Dumbells
Adjustable dumbells are great because you get a whole lot of different weights of dumbells in a small package.

The ones most recommended are the PowerBlock dumbells. These look clumsy because they are rectangle, but it lets them have more weight for the size making them a lot more functional.

The recommended ones to start off with are the PowerBlock Personal Adjustable 5 to 45 pounds per Dumbell Set. These are very well built and provide maximum functionality. They also allow for room for you to grow, as if you want more weight you can upgrade them later.

If you want something a bit better looking, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells are very good. The only problem is they only go up to 52.5 pounds each, so if you ever plan on using more weight than this you won’t be able to. Read more

8 Reasons to Use Dumbells

January 15, 2009 · Filed Under Weights Equipment · Comment

People who know me know that I am a big advocate of dumbells. You can do a full body workout with just dumbells, and get better results than machines. If you are building a home gym on a budget, forget everything; just buy an adjustable bench and dumbells.

So here are the 8 reasons why dumbells are such a great piece of equipment:

1. They don’t restrict movement
Dumbells allow you to move in any way you want, while still providing resistance. Unlike machines that force you to move in a certain way, with dumbells you can work on the exact muscle you want to work on, moving them how you want. Read more

How Drinking Water Helps You Build Muscles

November 25, 2008 · Filed Under Muscle Building Diet · Comment

water
Everyone knows that drinking water is important, but most people don’t realise just how much it will help with gaining muscle mass.

WHY? Well you are made up of around 80% water. Lean muscles are made up of 75% water, so of course they need lots of water to function correctly.

Simply put, water increases your body output so you can get the most out of your muscle building. Here is how water helps your body:

Maximum Strength – Not having enough water can really decrease your muscle performance. I hear people saying “yeh, but by how much?” Well 3% dehydration can lead to about a 10-15% loss in strength. This is a massive decrease, and we should always be trying to get the most from every workout. To do this, you need to drink enough water to stay at your strongest. Read more

Buying Weight Lifting Gloves

November 24, 2008 · Filed Under Weights Equipment · Comment

To be able to lift to your full potential, you really need a good pair of weight lifting gloves.

When I started weight lifting a big problem I had was that my hands hurt from holding the metal bars way before my muscles couldn’t lift anymore. For most people this means that they are limited by their hands, not their muscles. This is where a good pair of lifting gloves comes in.

A good pair of weight lifting gloves is the Harbinger 143 Pro. The best feature about these gloves is that they cover the fingers perfectly. Unlike many gloves, they cover both the middle and bottom of the fingers, to stop them from getting blisters. Read more

Buying Weights

September 20, 2008 · Filed Under Weights Equipment · Comment

buying-weightsWeights are the most important pieces of muscle building equipment. Without weights you won’t be gaining any muscle, so this is what you should focus on buying first. Here is a guide to what types of weights you should buy.

Types of Weights
There are a few types of different weights:
1. Rubber coated Weights – these are the best kind of weights, but also the most expensive. Because they are coated in rubber, they won’t damage your floors.
2. Plastic Filled Weights - These are a cheaper option than rubber coated weights, but not as durable. Because they are made of plastic they crack easier, so you may have to buy new weights every few years.
3. Cast Iron Weights – These are the best kind of weights for people who don’t really care about their floors. These weights are less expensive then the rubber coated weights, but are very durable so you won’t need to replace them for a very long time. Read more

Lots of people workout lots, but still aren’t gaining muscle as fast as they should be. What a lot of people new to muscle building don’t realize is working out is only half the picture. The other half is your muscle building diet.

Just to explain you need to be giving your body more energy then it normally uses. This means that your body can use this extra energy to build up new muscles, rather than just maintaining the body you already have. This means you need to feed your body a good muscle building diet. Read more
