How Drinking Water Helps You Build Muscles

Everyone knows that drinking water is important, but most people don’t realise just how much it will help with gaining muscle mass.

WHY? Well you are made up of around 80% water. Lean muscles are made up of 75% water, so of course they need lots of water to function correctly.

Simply put, water increases your body output so you can get the most out of your muscle building. Here is how water helps your body:

Maximum Strength – Not having enough water can really decrease your muscle performance. I hear people saying “yeh, but by how much?” Well 3% dehydration can lead to about a 10-15% loss in strength. This is a massive decrease, and we should always be trying to get the most from every workout. To do this, you need to drink enough water to stay at your strongest.

Joint Protection – Your body uses water to create the lubrication between the joints in your body. When you do weight lifting you are putting extra pressure on these joints, so you need to drink lots of water to make sure your body can lubricate your joints properly.

Food Absorption – Water helps your body absorb the food and nutrients you put in. There is no point eating all this good food, and giving your body supplements, if it can’t digest them all properly. You want to drink enough water so you’re body is absorbing everything you put in it and converting it to muscle.

So how much water should you drink?
There seems to be this formula going around that you should take your weight in pounds, and multiply it by 0.6 to get your water intake in ounces.

So for example if you weigh 150 pounds, then 150 x 0.6 = 90 ounces of water per day.

To me this is only a rough estimation. I use the pee test. You should be drinking enough so that most of your pee is clear colored. If it’s not, then go out and drink more!

So how do you drink so much water? Well I think the best way is to keep a water bottle on you all the time, and constantly sip from it.

I personally like the Camelback Water Bottles. I like them because they are always leak proof, and they have a cool drinking straw to make it really easy to drink, without having to tip the bottle.

But really any old water bottle will do, just make sure you keep drinking from it.

An important point to make is that you should be drinking water. I like to have a sport drink after a workout to replace lost salts, but except for that you should be drinking water.

When you drink other drinks (soda, juice, alcohol etc.), you are getting more sugars. You’re body then needs more water to break these down, so you aren’t providing it with the water it needs.

So go out and drink water. This will help with your ability to stay strong in workouts and gain muscle quickly. So no matter if you feel like it or not, just drink it.
