Is protein necessary as a muscle building supplement?
In a previous article I discussed the benefits of protein powder when muscle building, but do you need to take all that protein?
There is definite evidence to show that protein does help build up muscles, so you should be eating lots of protein. But most people when they do muscle building, also eat a lot more. If you are eating double what you normally eat, and you are eating right, then you will be getting extra protein your muscles need. Foods such as meat, chicken, milk and egg all have the protein you need.
There is a lot of hype about protein powder being better for building muscles then the protein from food. This is simply not true, and is just marketing for the muscle building supplements. If you eat right, you will be getting all the protein you require.
The key benefit to protein as a muscle building supplement is taking it right. Research has shown that the muscle benefit most from taking protein before and after exercising, as this helps feed the muscles and makes them grow. Not everyone has the ability to take chicken or milk to the gym, and for others eating before working out makes them feel sick. Protein supplements are a convenient way to get the protein straight to your muscles at the time that it is needed - before and after working out.
Remember people lose weight on a high protein diet, so it’s not all that is necessary to help gain muscle mass. The protein you get from normally balanced meals will be enough to provide your muscles the protein they need to grow, as well as providing your body the rest of the energy it needs to stay healthy. You use a lot of energy while you work out, and this can’t all come from protein.
You build up muscle over time, so you don’t need heaps of protein at once. If you eat enough protein everyday in your diet, it will give your muscles what they need as they build up. Some people eat protein supplement (bars and shakes) every few hours, in the hope that they will build up extra muscles. Although this isn’t really bad for your body, it does overwork your kidney. These people don’t really get much benefit from it, and just end up with expensive urine, as your body can’t use all that extra protein.
So before you go spending heaps on protein muscle building supplements, think about if you really need that much? If you balance your diet so that it is rich in protein, you should only need to take protein around your exercise times, and get the same effects.
