8 Reasons to Use Dumbells

January 15, 2009 · Filed Under Weights Equipment

People who know me know that I am a big advocate of dumbells. You can do a full body workout with just dumbells, and get better results than machines. If you are building a home gym on a budget, forget everything; just buy an adjustable bench and dumbells.

So here are the 8 reasons why dumbells are such a great piece of equipment:

1. They don’t restrict movement
Dumbells allow you to move in any way you want, while still providing resistance. Unlike machines that force you to move in a certain way, with dumbells you can work on the exact muscle you want to work on, moving them how you want.

2. No Unnatural Positions
Machines and some barbell exercises put your muscles in situations that don’t normally occur in real life. Dumbells make sure the way you build up is the way the body would naturally bulk up in real life situations and thus healthier for your body.

3. Balanced Body Development
When you work out using dumbells, you use most of your body. For example when you do a squat using dumbells, you are building up your arm, upper body and leg muscles. This gives you a balanced workout. When you use a machine, you usually target a specific muscle, which can lead to an imbalanced looking body if you don’t spread your machine time evenly across the different muscles in your body.

4. Exercise Stabilizer Muscles
Stabilizers are the muscles that help support your main muscles. These are necessary to help lift things and generally be strong. These are not developed when using machines, as you only target the main muscle. But when you use dumbells you are doing actual lifting so you build these muscles too. What’s the point in having a nice buff body if your lanky little friend is stronger then you?

5. Help Your body to be injury Resistant
Most injuries occur in a vertical position. Yet on most gym equipment (not including those with cables) you are exercising in the horizontal position. This means you are working out in a plane that most injuries don’t occur, and are not building up the right muscles to prevent injuries. Dumbells let you work in the vertical plane of movement easily.

6. Burn More Calories
Well you are exercising more muscles … so it makes sense.

7. They are cheap
Well maybe not a whole set of pro-styled dumbells. But you can get just the ones you want, or adjustable dumbells, for a very reasonable price.

8. Don’t take up too much room
A few dumbells or a set of adjustable dumbells will take up only a few square feet. You can keep these anywhere, unlike machinery which you need a dedicated gym area.

So go out, buy some dumbells, and start building up muscles knowing you are using the best method possible.
