Buying Weight Lifting Gloves

November 24, 2008 · Filed Under Weights Equipment

To be able to lift to your full potential, you really need a good pair of weight lifting gloves.

When I started weight lifting a big problem I had was that my hands hurt from holding the metal bars way before my muscles couldn’t lift anymore. For most people this means that they are limited by their hands, not their muscles. This is where a good pair of lifting gloves comes in.

A good pair of weight lifting gloves is the Harbinger 143 Pro. The best feature about these gloves is that they cover the fingers perfectly. Unlike many gloves, they cover both the middle and bottom of the fingers, to stop them from getting blisters.

They also have a breathable back and no wrist straps, so you don’t get sweaty and have to take them off all the time.

For those of you that like the extra support of the wrist straps, the Harbinger 1250 training grip gloves are the way to go. These are great quality gloves, and provide the padding and wrist straps for those people that need more support. As well as being supportive for both the wrists and hand position, these gloves also provide enough padding to make lifting a lot more comfortable.

Things to look for when buying:

  • Material - Usually you want leather gloves as these provide the best grip. Also look for a spandex back as this gives breathing and flecibility to the glove.
  • Padded Palms and covered fingers - this is the reason you are buying gloves. To protect your hands from callusing. Just make sure the tips are open, as it lets your hands breathe, and you can feel more.
  • Reinforced Stitching - when weight lifting some areas of the glove get more workout then others. These areas need reinforced stitching from stopping them wearing out too quick.
  • Wrist Straps - this is more a personal preference. Some people hate the feeling of wrist straps. I personally use wrist straps, as even though I don’t have particularly weak wrists I still feel the benefit in using them.

Just remember when buying weight lifting gloves that different people have different needs. Some people may just want something to protect their hands. Others need extra support to protect their wrists and guide their hands to the right fit.

Weight Lifting gloves will allow you to lift more, and will transfer the stress away from your hands. This means you can maximize your lifting potential, and get the maximum possible from your muscles.
